Aeron Automation Ltd

East Kilbride-based precision engineering firm Aeron Automation has built a strong track record for reliability and service over the last three decades.

Company founder Alan Rae turned to Business Gateway Lanarkshire for help when Aeron needed to modernise its systems and update its skills. The company has enjoyed a strong relationship with Business Gateway ever since.

"Business Gateway have helped us in various ways during recent years, including training of staff, changes in our management systems, and also with securing investment in new technology including the development of our CAD/CAM facility which helps design our products," comments Alan.

"The Gateway also helped us achieve ISO9001 status, which is vital for a company like our's to raise its game, and meet modern customer requirements."

Aeron began in the early 1980s as a tool making business, doing CNC (computerised numerical machine) work for several multi-national customers including the electronics industry and the heavy-plant manufacturer, Caterpillar.

The company, employing nine people, has developed its capability considerably, with the capacity to make large amounts of small components for a range of uses. "We do some work in overseas markets, but our core activity is in the UK and Ireland," explains Alan.

"We have been investing, even during the difficult times since the credit crunch, and that has helped us considerably. Turnover is rising by up to a third as a result of the investment in machinery, and training.

"Altogether we now have some very sophisticated machinery, a well trained staff, and we are raising our quality levels in line with customer demand."

Robert Swinburne, Business Gateway Lanarkshire business adviser, commented: "Aeron is a very good example of the type of high quality small manufacturing companies that we have in Lanarkshire. The company has been able to adapt to customers' needs, and it has diversified its customer base as a result, which is a very good thing especially in difficult economic circumstances.

"We were able to advise and assist the company on various issues concerning quality improvements, training and investment. This has varied from specific training for management and other staff, to support for capital investment such as software. We also supported them to achieve their ISO9000.

"At a practical business level we helped them to get a new website designed and launched, and also to take their management accounting in-house."

Alan Rae concludes: "Business Gateway Lanarkshire bring a professional approach, and a very knowledgeable one, to support companies like Aeron. It is good to be able to develop a working relationship with them, and to keep in touch with our adviser so that he knows about our progress at each stage of development."
